Youngsters in the studio

Kids are all fascinated by big cameras in our studio.  A lot of basic science becomes very visible when they first look at the glass screens and can see the lenses and optics at work.

Tweens and teens are intrigued by the darkroom processes too, reflecting a new appetite for slower, more thoughtful photography.  Portrait sessions usually end in the darkroom watching the photographs appear on the paper where I can also explain some of the chemistry behind silver-based photographic processes.

For younger children 'instant' colour images are a faster, more engaging option. They get to press the button to make the photograph appear from one of the big wooden cameras, and then see the image develop as they watch. It's usually the first time they have been handed a printed photograph to take home, having grown up with images on screens.
